Rārangi Emergency Response Group

(formerly the Rārangi Civil Defence Group )

The current Rārangi Emergency Response Group was formed in 2013 after the Seddon earthquake and following a well attended community meeting that was held at the Rārangi Golf Club. We have been meeting regularly ever since.

About Rārangi Emergency Response Group

Marlborough Emergency Management have provided us with support, guidance, equipment and training in how to set up and run Emergency Response Centres. We currently have 5 active members and we meet monthly for an hour on the third Tuesday of every month at either the Rārangi Fire Station or Tuamarina School for training, planning and discussion. If you are interested in getting involved please get in touch.

We have set up two locations that can be used as Emergency Response Centres in emergencies – the Rārangi Community Centre and the Tuamarina School Hall. Both are equipped with a Civil Defence VHF radio that allow us to communicate with the Marlborough Emergency Response Coordination Centre during an emergency event. We have stored in both locations a generator and lights as well as other useful equipment and materials.

Our emphasis is on resilience and on everyone in the community being as prepared as possible to support ourselves in the event of a major emergency. To this end in 2016 we produced and distributed throughout Rārangi a “Be Prepared Leaflet”. We replaced this with the the “Get Ready Rārangi” leaflet which we distributed to every household in Rārangi in October 2023.
If your household doesn’t have a copy there are spares in the Rārangi Community Library.

Also in 2023 with the help of Marlborough Emergency Management we produced the Rārangi Community Emergency Response Plan which is published on the MDC website in October. This can be viewed by going to: Rārangi Community Emergency Response Plan

And in 2025 we published a “Taking Care of Your Animals in Emergencies” leaflet which is also available from the Community Library. Alternatively get in touch with us and we can get copies of either leaflet to you. A copy of “Get Ready Rārangi” leaflet will be included in every new resident Welcome Pack.

We also see value in connecting with other groups and agencies working in the wider local community and from time to time organise meetings with them.
